European Bat Weekend Bat Walk
Thanks to everyone that turned out, 32 people signed in to witness a spectacular storm, a lightning bolt that must have blown the tern-raft out of the lake and got the local Tawny Owls talking, and a bit of rain to make sure we went home wet. Oh, and quite a few bats performed for us too. Amongst others we recorded Soprano Pipistrelle, Common Pipistrelle, Noctule, Daubenton’s Bat, Natterer’s Bat and Brown Long-eared Bat. The Soprano Pipistrelle was by far the commonest and would have been the species flying around our heads and dive-bombing towards our faces all around the lakes.
EWP Moth and Bat Night
Again we had a good turnout for this and thankfully no thunderstorms this time! This was a chance for people to use a bat detector and see how a moth trap works and the wildlife did not disappoint. We took a short walk between Terry’s and Engine Pool’s to use the bat detectors and detected 5 species of bat, then returned to the moth traps set up in Malthouse Lane Car Park to see what we had caught. Thanks once again to Izumi and Paul for giving their time and expertise.
