Its great to see EWP is back in action and writing news letters and more importantly protecting our wildlife and educating us. I for one have noticed so much more during our enforced lock down from the Muntjacks, Tawny Owl, Hedgehog, two cub foxes and occasionally the vixen last week there was some sort of bird of prey sitting on the drive. I have yet to tell Matt of Birds of Earlswood about that. We actually found a frog, once upon a time the garden had lots of frogs but they like the Hedgehogs are now few and far between. The Tabby pussy cat made another Guest appearance the other night after not being seen since the end of May. We have had red dragonflies, blue dragonflies, birds tapping on windows. We have watched the Blackbirds feed their young and the baby birds fledge and fly. We think we have bats my only wish is I wish I could capture in photographs some of the beautiful wildlife I have seen. I have to share this with you all. Earlswood Lakes, Terry’s Pool. For many reasons Paul and I hadn’t walked around The Lakes for a long time. On Saturday 11th January 2020. I packed the dog in to my little car and had a firm plan that Paul & I would walk the dog around the lakes. I actually can’t remember walking Buds around Earlswood Lakes previously. In fact the last time I walked any part of the lakes was as part of a rememberance for a member of our family probably Feb 2017. In any case our walk in 2020 was a very pleasant surprise. I can’t tell you or explain how much hard work has been done by local volunteers, local organisations & those providing grants. The whole experience was very different and the hard work that must have gone in to preserving wild life, foot paths, litter free  (Almost) some selfish Barsteward managed to leave A calling card.  Tree care, Birds, Bats and little Critas. Bird Boxes We have now put up all the specialist bird boxes (which were partly funded by a donation from the Earlswood Fete Committee) around the lakes and as can be seen from these great photos by Tony Philp we already have some interest! Bob is the membership secretary for Earlswood Wildlife Partnership. He has kindly agreed to tell us a little bit more about EWP and his role within it. Bob is my first willing volunteer to provide editorial for my blog and for that I am extremely grateful. I have a hit list of people and organisations I would like to invite to be Guest Writers whether they will all be as willing as Bob I really don't know but I really do hope so. Some of the work our volunteers and organisations do for us in order to keep our environment and community ticking along often goes unrecognised by the wider community. Dormouse Survey  Is this a dormouse nest?.......Well the answer is probably yes! Although the nest contained a wood mouse when we found it, Andy Bucklitch thinks it may have been made by a dormouse. It was found in one of the survey tubes along the fence of the railway line and may be the first evidence we have of dormice present in Clowes Wood. The survey tubes have now been collected and cleaned for storage over the winter months but will be put out again in March, this time on the south side of the wood. Specific areas have already been identified and we will put a number of the survey tubes in each area to maximise our chances of detecting dormice. The EWP has now bought an IR digital movement camera that is activated when motion is detected. It is able to record still photos and video footage both day and night which will be very useful in monitoring wildlife in the area. As funding permits, we are looking into the feasibility of a kingfisher nest bank, repairing the artificial islands in Terry’s and Engine pools and repairing the otter halt. In conjunction with the parish council we would like to create a wildflower area along the side of Engine pool – so lots to do! Please come along to our AGM on Tuesday 11 th  June to find out more. The dormouse, reptile, bat and butterfly surveys will be continuing and we hope to undertake a bee survey as well but if you have any suggestions of the type of activities you would like please get in touch. Dormouse Survey – 10 th  November No evidence of dormice was found but we did find a wood mouse nest. This caused a bit of excitement but unfortunately, the nest was empty! We would like to extend a warm welcome to George Green who has joined our group replacing Izumi Segawa as our contact with the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. George has been with the WWT for just over a year working with the Nature Force teams and has now been appointed as Living Landscape Officer with responsibility for the Solihull area. George has already helped out with our stall at the Earlswood fete and you can expect to see him at our future events. Earlswood Fete We ran a stall at the Earlswood fete and managed to raise almost £100 and recruit a number of new members. The pond dipping tray set up by Paul Wilkinson was a great success with the youngsters!   Thanks to all who helped out especially Brenda and Chris. Dormouse Survey A small group has examined and cleaned out the dormouse tubes we installed back in February  but only found slugs, snails, woodlice, centipedes and spiders! This is not a great surprise as we do not believe there are any dormice in Clowes Wood...

This year we want to install more but we also need to find out if any bats are using the boxes already put up. I am really pleased that British Waterways have reconsidered their trial of Kayak Fishing on Earlswood Lakes and have now ceased the trial. I would like to thank them for such a prompt reply and considering the thoughts of Local People.
