As part of our ongoing commitment to road safety, and in partnership with the local community, the Road Safety Unit has now completed Phase 1 of a scheme aimed at reducing casualties a crossroads located in the heart of the ruralvillageofEarlswood.
In the last 5 years a total of 12 accidents have arisen mainly attributed to vehicles failing to observe or appreciate the junction from the direction ofValley Road. Of these 3 resulted in serious injury, and statistically without intervention that overall figure would have continued at the same rate or indeed likely to have risen in future years.
Phase 1 focused on preventing the ‘see through’ affect drivers have when approaching fromValley Road, which in the view of the Road Safety Unit significantly contributed towards drivers failing to observe the junction.
A build-out on Umberslade Road has now been installed which in turn has afforded greater protection for road users using the parking bays beyond the build-out, a causation factor in another collision at the crossroads.
Future phases will investigate the conspicuousness and road user awareness of the junction fromValley Road, which is to be achieved by a combination of improving junction alignment and provision of interactive advanced warning signs.
